Known globally as an opportunity to celebrate the food grown on the land, Harvest Festivals are an ancient celebration which has been used to celebrate successful harvests since pagan times.

Before Christianity, Saxon farmers would traditionally offer the first cut sheaf of corn to the god of fertility, which was thought to protect the following year’s harvest. It was believed that the last sheaf contained the Spirit of the Corn, and after it was cut, the sacrifice of an animal usually followed.
